Corals for the future

Coral reefs: The rainforests of the oceans

Coral reefs are amazing underwater worlds and are among the most most valuable ecosystems on our planet. Find out why they are of vital importance:

Why are coral reefs vital?

Coral reefs protect the coasts from erosion and minimize the effects of rising sea levels. 25% of all marine life lives in coral reefs, and as the corals disappear, so do the fish that are an important source of food for many millions of people.

More than 50% of cancer medication are extracted from coral reefs, which underlines their biological and economic importance. Many regions depend on coral reef tourism, which creates jobs and contributes to the economy.

Coral reefs are under threat

The warming of the oceans has already caused 50% of the world's corals to die off, with even more drastic effects in some regions such as the Seychelles, where the figure is as high as 90%.

Our mission and way of working

We are actively committed to the protection and restoration of coral reefs. Find out how we use super corals to reconstruct coral reefs:

Super corals

Marine biologists have discovered particularly resistant corals that have a high temperature tolerance.

Breeding and rearing

We collect small fragments of these corals (5 to 10 cm) and pull them up on ropes in the water. The coral fragments remain in our "underwater nursery" for 9 to 12 months.

Release into the sea

As soon as the corals have reached a sufficient size, they are resettled in the sea and form the basis for the creation of new reefs.

Monitoring and partnerships

We work on our own projects and with local cooperation partners to ensure that our projects are implemented successfully.
