ClimaClic Award

Together for climate protection:
Our project at the ClimaAward 2026

We have applied for the ClimaAward 2026 with our Hartholzaue Lüdenscheid project.

The ClimaAward recognizes non-profit initiatives that contribute to climate protection through concrete projects. By participating, we aim to demonstrate the importance of local, practical climate protection solutions while simultaneously inspiring more people to get involved in our efforts.

What is the ClimaAward?

The ClimaAward is part of ClimaClic’s German climate lottery, which provides financial support for climate protection projects. Submitted projects are evaluated by both an expert jury and the community, with both assessments carrying equal weight in the final decision. The winners will be announced in June 2026.

Our Project – Hardwood Floodplain Forest in Lüdenscheid

A new, climate-resilient floodplain forest is being created on a site previously covered by spruce trees unsuited to the location. The spruce trees had suffered damage due to waterlogging and were increasingly dying off. Through comprehensive site preparation and replanting with species appropriate for the location—such as pedunculate oak, ash, black alder, and willow—we are developing a stable hardwood floodplain forest. This improves soil quality in the long term and protects the adjacent body of water, which had previously been burdened by the acidic carpet of conifer needles. Existing mature trees are being preserved and contribute to a diverse forest structure through natural seed dispersal. In addition, we are installing nesting aids for numerous animal species—ranging from bats to birds of prey—and will monitor the site’s development over the coming years through maintenance and regular checks of the nesting aids.
